The Chinese Translation of "La casa de Bernarda Alba": The Strategy of Flexible Faithfulness and the Significance of the First Spanish Play Translated into Traditional Chinese
Abstract
This work aims to discuss the concept of translation proposed by the Chinese translator Perng Ching-hsi. In order to achieve that goal we compare the English and Chinese translations of the Spanish theatre play The House of Bernarda Alba. The specific purpose is to justify the flexibility of faithfulness in Perng’s translation. Therefore, on the one hand, with regard to the interesting Spanish cultural elements, this work analyses resolutions and investigates translation skills and strategies employed: terminology of people’s names as well as expressions. On the other hand, we point out translation mistakes caused by cultural and language differences.Downloads
