Abstract

Shifu, You’ll Do Anything for a Laugh is a 60-page short story by Mo Yan, the first Chinese-born Nobel Laureate in Literature recognised by the Chinese government. While most of Mo Yan’s works are long novels, these short stories constitute powerful portrayals of China in the 20th century, full of contradiction, sarcasm and black humour. This study sets out to examine the Spanish translation of Chengyu (Chinese idioms) —distinctive proverbial expression in Chinese language formed in strict patterns or rules—. It particularly focuses on translation techniques, the status of Chinese literature translation in literature systems and the analysis of the translations of Mo Yan’s work in English and Spanish.
