Analysis of the transfer of Tibetan cultural elements in the Spanish translation of Voyage d’une Parisienne à Lhasa

Abstract

In Voyage d'une Parisienne à Lhasa, Alexandra David-Néel writes about her journey to Tibet that she undertakes disguised as a pilgrim with her adopted son. This journey made her the first European to have access to the capital of Tibet. Throughout her adventures, David-Néel strives to convey as many cultural elements as possible to the reader. However, from the first pages of the novel, the author affirms that she adapts these elements so that the French-speaking public can understand them. In this work, we compare Voyage d’une Parisienne à Lhasa with its Spanish translation, Mi viaje a Lhasa, by Milagro Revest Mira to analyze whether the degree of domestication of cultural elements varies depending on the target audience.
