André Velter’s Poem “Sonate à S.” (2012) in Spanish: Strategies for Translating Rhythm in Free Verse
Abstract
This paper addresses some problems related to the translation of poetry, specifically the difficulties arisen from translating rhythm in free verse. To that purpose, I present a translation of the poem “Sonate à S.”, included in Avec un peu plus de ciel (2012)–a recent work by the renowned contemporary French writer André Velter. After a brief survey of free verse, rhythm and possible translation strategies, the paper analyzes characteristics of the original poem and explores the difficulties of translation. The article ends with the principal conclusions drawn. An appendix with the source text and the target text is included.Downloads
