Radio in Spain in the face of the Ecosocial Transition: themes, narrative points of view, shortcomings and challenges
Abstract
This research presents a comprehensive mapping and categorization of Spanish radio programming related to the Ecosocial Transition (T.E.), defined as a process that fosters initiatives and projects aimed at building more ecological, supportive, just, equitable, inclusive, diverse, and feminist societies. The theoretical framework introduces the concepts of Diagnostic-Information (D.I.) and Antidote-Information (A.I.). The latter transcends simply identifying problems and tracing causes; it offers actionable alternatives and promotes active audience engagement. The analysis seeks to highlight radio programs that illuminate the importance of embracing T.E. and its myriad forms and possibilities. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, we examined 110 radio programs from 21 Spanish stations, categorizing them according to thematic subdivisions. Our hypotheses suggest a commitment from radio to the Ecosocial Transition, along with a notable prevalence of content that prioritizes diagnostic perspectives over antidotal solutions. The results validate our initial assumptions, showing that RNE Radio 5 leads the way with 32 programs related to T.E. (29.1%), making it the top station engaged with Ecosocial Transition themes. The category of Quality of Life occupies the most significant portion of programming, while Migration and the LGBTI+ community are represented by the fewest specialized programs.
