News coverage of environmental activism: The case of Extinction Rebellion
Abstract
This research analyses the information coverage that the newspapers El País, La Vanguardia, ABC, elDiario.es, Público and El Confidencial carry out on Extinction Rebellion (XR), a group that performs nonviolent actions with the intention of putting pressure on governments to take measures aimed at reducing the effects of the ecological crisis. Through a mixed methodology, headlines and paragraphs that make reference to XR are studied from its creation in 2018 to June 2022, considering four specific indicators: civil and/or non-violent disobedience, security measures adoption, citizen participation and stereotypes, prejudices and social or pejorative words. The results show that 10% of the publications resort to stereotypes or prejudices, that more than 50% of the information alludes to civil disobedience and more than 20% of the news associate security measures with citizen participation.
