Feminist memes and interactions on Facebook
Abstract
This paper offers an exploratory analysis of the women’s liberation movement through memes posted on the social media platform Facebook. Specifically, we focused on the political role of humor in memes used by the fanpages Conscious Feminist and She-Ra Feminist. The study employed virtual ethnography, content analysis and bibliographic review to analyze the relationships, types of netizens, and behaviors related to the memes published on the fanpages. The research found that the memes simultaneously serve as a form of documentation of gender-based violence, a space for the contestation of meaning around sex roles and a strategy of relative impact to foster cultural and social change.
