Psychoanalysis and revolution: A critical psychology for liberation movements

Keywords: drive, liberation, repetition, transference, unconscious

Abstract

This manifesto is for movements of liberation for a better world. It concerns the interrelation between the miserable exploitative reality of current life and our ‘internal’ life, our psychology. Psychoanalysis captures the intimate interconnection between this reality and what is felt to be deep inside each one of us. We need to comprehend the nature of this interconnection in order to construct an alternative practice to capitalism, sexism and racism. Our task is to reconstruct psychoanalysis as an authentic form of ‘critical psychology’. We address the role of the unconscious, repetition, drive and transference in analysis in the clinic and politics to address questions of subjective transformation.
