Religious neoconservatism on Twitter: The #ConMisHijosNoTeMetas campaign and discourse against gender equality
Abstract
This article presents exploratory and analytical research focused on the discursive analysis of the #ConMisHijosNoTeMetas campaign on Twitter. This campaign is a multi-national initiative in the battle over values in education and the anti-abortion agenda. The objective was to analyze the capacity of Twitter to inform and mobilize, as well as to examine if there was a discourse characterized by spectacularization and dramatization. The results show that content is disseminated through opinion and persuasion, and that more than half of the tweets analyzed disseminated personal attacks. These messages were linked to sex education, abortion, gender violence, the events around Women’s Day, and a pro-life demonstration, even generating hate speech against gender equality.
