The Airbnb experience. Capitalist and cultural enjoyment in two old buildings in Mexico City
Abstract
The article presents a hermeneutic study on Airbnb in the Historic Center of Mexico City. We begin with data from its platform, focusing on two 17th and 18th-century buildings that have been remodeled and are now available for rent. Our analysis proposes, from a Lacanian psychoanalytic perspective, the relevance of pleasures and their modes of enjoyment as expressed in the ways of narrating rental spaces. The study identifies the expression of emotions in relation to cultural dispositions as its central elements. After a qualitative review, we define the interconnection between narratives around security, pleasure, colonial architecture, and the use of the building. All these elements are framed within a capitalized enjoyment of space that implies a direction in the use of pleasure in its union with consumption on the accommodation platform.
