A perspective on teaching and investigation at the university of the 21st century
Abstract
The university as an institution today has to fight the loss of its privileged position where knowledge is produced. The new concept of a university that emerges from this conflict creates important challenges for the mission of the university and the traditional principal functions of teaching-investigation. By looking at the forces that envelope the equilibrium of these two functions, the study reaffirms their link as the basis for the University of the Twenty-first Century. This premise implies defending the synergy between teaching and research in academia against the changes experienced by society and the global economy, which may destroy the essence of the university’s mission in favour of a single and exclusive ‘utilitarian’ purpose.
