Abstract

Language is a means by which any society sees and describes the world and life. It is needless to say that words and idioms show part of the culture, history, and tradition of a civilization. However, numbers –at least some of them- have also developed additional meanings apart from those related purely to quantification in order to show and describe concepts that human beings were unable to understand. For that reason, some of them have a special significance. We aimed to study number 9, which has a special meaning in Mandarin Chinese, and to analyze how translators have negotiated linguistic barriers in order to translate all the meanings it possesses into Spanish.
