A Contrastive Pragmatic Analysis of English and Spanish Verbal Intensification in Literary Texts
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to compare the pragmatic functions of an intensifier construction in Peninsular Spanish formed with the particle venga (venga a + infinitivo) and intensifier structures in English. For that purpose, we analyze the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic factors that translators take into account when interpreting intensified structures into Spanish. The corpus for this study has been obtained from literary texts in Google Books. Our results indicate that the intensifier construction formed with venga conveys semantic and pragmatic effects from English into Spanish, such as expression of iteration, as well as the speaker’s assessment (disagreement, surprise, etc.).Downloads
