Between Efficiency and misinformation: the integration of artificial intelligence in Mexican journalism
Abstract
The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism varies across socioeconomic and cultural contexts, and Mexico is no exception. This study analyzes technology adoption patterns through in-depth interviews with ten digital media outlets recognized for their credibility in understanding how Mexican media integrate AI toolds into their processes. AI integration primarily optimizes tasks and, to a lesser extent, contributes to content generation. Despite these initiatives, AI adoption in Mexico faces multiple barriers, including high implementation costs, skepticism towards AI tools, and a lack of technical training, all limitating its widespread use. This reception contrasts with other regions where media organizations extensively employ AI to create automated content for specific audiences. Another critical challenge involves the risk of misinformation, as AI's ability to generate hyper-realistic content enables manipulation. Although AI technologies enhance efficiency, the Mexican media emphasize the need for rigorous human supervision to ensure accuracy and uphold journalistic ethics. In this context, the findings reveal a paradox: while AI can potentially transform journalism, economic, ethical, and technological tensions in influence its adoption. Overcoming these barriers requires investment in infrastructure, training, and regulations that promote responsible AI use in journalism.
