The media visibility of misinformation in news broadcasts: the case of La 1 from RTVE
Abstract
The present study analyzes how 517 news reports from La 1 of Televisión Española (TVE) have addressed the disinformation phenomenon in the period 2013-2022. To do this, content analysis was used on 559 news units filtered by the terms hoax, fake news, and disinformation. The chronological evolution of the vocabulary, themes, sources, actors involved, and approaches used in the news have been observed. The disinformation terminology breaks through with greater intensity from the year 2017, coinciding with the responsibility attributed to the disinformation phenomenon regarding the results of the presidential elections in the United States and Brexit. Another correlation is established in 2020 with the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disinformation is largely associated with political information in the national section of the tv news. Regarding the treatment that journalists give to the disinformation terms, it evolves from information to pedagogy.
