Analyzing public discourse and toxicity on X: the case of transgender athlete Lia Thomas

Keywords: transgender athletes, social media, content analysis, hate speech, Lia Thomas

Abstract

The inclusion of transgender athletes in sports has garnered significant public attention, especially with cases like Lia Thomas, the first transgender athlete to win a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) swimming title in the United States. This study examines discourse on X (formerly Twitter) surrounding Thomas’s participation, carrying out a content analysis of the shared tweets. It investigates the prevalence of toxicity and hate speech in the comments using tools like Google Perspective API and Hatebase and assesses their performance and reliability against human labeling by researchers. By analyzing the tone and content of posts, this research aims to understand public sentiment and the broader implications of these discussions on social media. The findings provide insights into the online perception of transgender athletes, the support or opposition they encounter, and the role of social media platforms in shaping public opinion on this controversial issue.
