The journalistic selection of User-Generated Content (UGC) for integration into television news: processes and challenges at Canal Sur TV
Abstract
This study explores User-Generated Content (UGC) from the perspective of its value and contribution to revitalizing television journalism in an environment of profound transformation and growing audience disengagement. To address the reasons that lead journalists to select this material, a content analysis of videos collected over the last decade on the official website of Canal Sur Televisión's archive is conducted. This entity is particularly relevant due to its uniqueness as a public broadcaster and its ambitious digitization and renewal project.
A total of 502 news pieces addressing reportable events on various topics were reviewed and analyzed—a meticulous effort that allowed for an evaluation of processes and the identification and coding of the criteria journalists use to select audiovisual material captured and produced by citizens. Methodologically, the content analysis is complemented and reinforced by a participant observation experience within the analyzed media outlet.
The results reveal that the UGC most valued by journalists is that which is recorded by citizens immediately and simultaneously with the event of interest. UGC offering additional information on a current, unpredictable, novel, and spectacular event is more likely to be included in a television news piece. It is confirmed that UGC is also selected by journalists for its potential informative and expressive contributions. The research does not overlook the ethical issues inherent in this type of content or the professional dynamics involved in its inclusion in a public broadcaster like Canal Sur Televisión.
