Interference in feminist participation and deliberation by digital facism

Keywords: antifeminism, gender digital violence, hate discourse, misinformation, technofascism

Abstract

This article explores various reactionary antifeminist digital actions carried out by misogynistic and xenophobic groups, radical antifeminists, and right-wing populists. The analysis found that key digital fascism strategies included misinformation campaigns, such as data manipulation and the spread of hoaxes related to gender issues and female public figures; the creation of a hostile and confrontational climate through the intentional trolling of debates, the introduction of polarized speech and the cultivation of hate speech in quasi-closed misogynistic forums; cyber harassment or online gender harassment through insults and threats directed against women and attacks against websites, personal online profiles or servers that produce feminist content, among others. The article also considers a series of initiatives and strategies promoted by groups and institutions to stop the advance of digital fascism and to promote a safe and free Internet for all.
