National Intelligence Service and its Influence on the Political Participation of Korean Youth Through Manipulation of Public Opinion

Keywords: democratisation, political disaffection, presidential election, social change, social networks

Abstract

This article analyses the impact on the political position of South Korean youth of the manipulation carried out by the Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) in the Choi-gate case and the sinking of MV Sewol, to favour Park Geun Hye’s presidential campaign during the 2012 elections. For that purpose, we conducted a survey with young Koreans and interviews with experts in South Korean culture, society, and politics. The results confirm (i) the influence of these events on the political disaffection of South Korea's youth and (ii) the existence of significant differences between the university and non-university political students.
