Guidelines for the selection of curriculum materials in teaching English as a foreign language

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the selection of didactic curriculum materials and the role they play in the processes of teaching and learning. Before that, we will look into the concept of needs analysis in order to find out the best materials that can be used. Special attention will be paid to the possibilities of selection, analysis and evaluation of materials, since they are the main means of transmission of contents to students trying to help them develop the basic skills set out in Annex I of the LOE. More specifically, this study will be focused on curricular materials applied to language teaching, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of using them as didactic resources. Finally, some reflections on teaching practice, textbooks and multimedia materials will be exposed.

Author Biography

Noelia Malla García, Universidad Complutense de Madrid
Noelia Malla García es Licenciada en Filología Inglesa con especialidad en Literatura Norteamericana por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. En 2010 obtiene el título de Máster en Estudios Literarios e inicia estudios de Tercer Ciclo en el marco del programa de Doctorado en Estudios Literarios, adscrito al Departamento de Filología Inglesa II.

Ha participado en diversos congresos nacionales e internacionales, pronunciando comunicaciones relativas fundamentalmente a la obra de Joseph Conrad y al modernismo angloamericano.

En 2013 obtiene una beca predoctoral avalada por el Instituto Polaco de Cultura de
Madrid y concedida por el Ministerio de Educación del Gobierno de Polonia para realizar una estancia de investigación en el Joseph Conrad Research Centre de la Jagiellonian University, en Cracovia.

Es miembro de la Asociación Española de Estudios Anglo-Norteamericanos (AEDEAN), así como de la Joseph Conrad Society (UK) y la Joseph Conrad Society of Poland.
