The relevance of page footnotes. The translation of an essay by Sakaguchi Ango
Abstract
In this article we try to justify the use of the polemic translator’s notes in the translation of essays even in the present context, where the reader has easy access to information, and focusing on the recipient of the translation. We base the argumentation in the quantitative results from a questionnaire taking the translation of the essay On decadence, written in April 1946 by the Japanese writer Sakaguchi Ango, as a case study. We analyze if the translator’s notes fulfill their essential aim: to facilitate a better understanding of the text by the Spanish-speaking readers. The final objectives of this article are to contribute to the bibliography on literary translation between Japanese and Spanish and to the few translation studies about the reception of the translator’s notes.
