Abstract
Buying a Fishing Rod for My Grandfather is a short story collection dealing with anecdotes happened in China. Gao Xingjian has lived in China for more than 40 years, experiencing the hardship during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution; therefore, the value of this book lies in the transmission of Chinese Culture. This present paper introduces the content of the above mentioned novel, the concept of writing as understood by Gao, and translation techniques of cultural referents in Buying a Fishing Rod for My Grandfather by means of the cultural perspectives in this literary work.
