The Videoblog in the Spanish press: Defining characteristics and status among the opinion journalistic genders
Abstract
The videoblog —defined as an audiovisual blog in which journalists comment current affairs allowing users’ interactivity— has become part of the digital press all over the world since the past decade. In this paper, the authors analyse videoblogs published by the seven best-selling Spanish newspapers, with the aim of identifying its basics features and determining if the vlog can be considered a genuine opinion gender or simply an online adaptation of the traditional journalistic columns. We applied a content analysis form to 82 videos published during 2020 and 2021, and concluded that videoblog preserves the main attributes of the column: prestigious authorship, dominance of opinion; fixed frequency, location and title; topic freedom and non-journalistic language.
