Presentation, Objectives, and Thematic Areas Disinformation poses a growing challenge for governments, citizens, and especially journalists. It manifests through the spread of fake news, rumors, conspiracy theories, or biased information that distorts reality and can generate confusion, misunderstandings, or deception. This phenomenon has been amplified by the widespread use of social media, where the speed of content dissemination and the lack of adequate filters facilitate the spread of disinformation. Additionally, combating disinformation involves ethical, regulatory, and technological considerations. Given this context, the special issue “(Dis)information in the Digital Ecosystem” invites contributions ranging from empirical studies on information disorders in various fields and multidisciplinary research approaches to critical perspectives on this phenomenon. This special issue aims to foster a deep understanding of the mechanisms, technologies, and strategies underlying disinformation dynamics, as well as the tools and concrete actions to counter them. The possible thematic areas for the special issue include:
  • Images and (dis)information in media and social networks
  • Disinformation or misinformation on sociopolitical issues
