Content curation in live news. The case of the 2023 election days in Spain

Abstract

Known as Live News, these journalistic documents usually carry out exhaustive and updated monitoring in almost real-time of the current news, usually of relevant events, as in this case, elections. As a  research methodology, we have followed the CAS method, Curation Analysis System, which has been used mainly in studies on journalistic newsletters, both from newspapers and independent authors. The CAS method is based on the analysis of various elements of content curation grouped into two dimensions (content and curation), among others: quantity of curated content; origin of the content (own or external); sources of information according to morphology (web pages, social networks...) and organization (media, official, citizens...); or curation techniques (summarizing, commenting, quoting...). As for the material, the Live News documents of eight Spanish newspapers were analyzed: four legacy media (El Mundo, El País, El Periódico and La Vanguardia) and four digital natives (El Confidencial, Eldiario.es, El Español and OK Diario). Two election days in Spain in 2023 have been analyzed: the municipal and regional elections on May 28 and the national elections on July 23. This is the first study that analyzes in detail the curation of content in live news in the digital press. In Conclusion its contributions may be novel both in terms of the content of the elections and the content of the national elections.

Su tesis doctoral se centró en el estudio de los factores de posicionamiento de sitios intensivos en contenidos, y especialmente de medios online, así como en la evaluación de herramientas de análisis SEO. Es especialista en posicionamiento en buscadores y en sistemas de monetización basados en estrategias de contenidos de calidad. Ha sido profesor asociado de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra, impartiendo docencia en la Facultad de Comunicación, en los Grados de Periodismo, Comunicación Audiovisual y Publicidad y Relaciones Públicas.

Juan-José Boté-Vericad, University of Barcelona

Juan-José Boté-Vericad es profesor de la Facultad de Información y Medios Audiovisuales (FIMA) de la Universitat de Barcelona (UB). Doctor en Filosofía (Lingüística y Ciencias de la Información) por la Universität Hildesheim (2022) y doctor en Información y Documentación en la Sociedad del Conocimiento por la Universidad de Barcelona (2013).
