Journalistic use of AI in Spanish media: current map and prospects for the immediate future
Abstract
This study draws a map of the journalistic use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Spain. To this end, a questionnaire was sent to one hundred media outlets. The answers obtained (88) allow to affirm that 60 % of the media use AI, especially for distributing information or relating to the audience and for gathering information. The automated production of texts is still scarce. The development of AI began in Spain in 2017 and 2018 and intensified at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. Currently, almost 75 % of the journalists surveyed have a positive or very positive opinion of it. In addition, interviews have been conducted with five managers of AI services providers, who also note a growing acceptance of algorithms by the media: from rejection or fear, they have come to be perceived more as an opportunity than a danger.
