How has communication changed during the covid-19 pandemic: The Spanish press on vaccines

Keywords: vaccination, health crisis, media, health journalism, covid-19

Abstract

The coverage of vaccines in the Spanish press El País and El Mundo is analysed, comparing the pre-pandemic (2012-2019) and pandemic (2020-2021) periods through the methodology of content analysis. During the pre-pandemic period, coverage of vaccines had an eminently scientific focus, with news pieces presenting the development of new vaccines and biomedical research. However, during the pandemic period, coverage of covid-19 vaccines focused mainly on prevention and vaccination campaigns. During the pandemic, the journalistic pieces show a greater extension and depth of information. Moreover, both periods were dominated by a positive tone towards vaccination and a human interest frame. During the covid-19 pandemic, journalism has become a priority and essential strategy to keep the population well informed about the health situation and preventive measures.
