The Spanish autonomous presidential inaugurations in the national press. Informative treatment and representation of the autonomous communities in ABC and El País.
Abstract
The main objective of this research is to analyze the role played by the different Spanish autonomous communities in the national media debate. The inauguration ceremony of the regional presidents is taken as a reference, an act with great institutional and political significance for each territory. The content analysis of the impact of the 207 inauguration ceremonies of the 107 Spanish regional presidents in ABC and El País, points to significant differences in terms of the role of each region in the national press. The data demonstrates the existence of a group made up of the historical communities and the Community of Madrid, which focuses media attention. As for the rest of the autonomies, there is unequal treatment that leads, in some cases, to the invisibility of certain territories. In addition, the results confirm that other factors also influence media coverage, such as the political party to which the president belongs or if there is a change in the presidency.
