Journalistic rigor and consistency the keys to the success of Spanish journalists on YouTube
Abstract
The challenge posed by YouTube in the press affects not only companies but also professionals, especially the younger ones, who have seen how they had to prepare for a new audience in the digital media era (Newman et al., 2019). Following a preliminary study on the presence of journalists on YouTube (Blanco & Palomo, 2019), this research analyses how those professionals develop content on the platform. After the initial results, nine in-depth interviews are conducted with the most successful journalists to understand how they interact with their audiences, and new metrics are taken to see the evolution of their channels. The results conclude that, despite the low number of individual initiatives on YouTube, those who work on their channel rigorously, on a long-term and consistent basis achieve significant growth that can reach up to seven times the number of visits.
