Platforms and audiovisual policy: Netflix in Spain
Abstract
The aim of this article is to reflect, in the field of audiovisual policies and in terms of diversity, on the impact of transnational platforms that offer pay-per-view audiovisuals on demand in Spain. To this end, the reactions that these platforms have generated since their arrival are described and analyzed, paying special attention to the company Netflix. Based on a critical documentary and bibliographic analysis, these reactions are studied from the position adopted by the main agents involved and/or affected. The results reveal a generalized lack of reflection and action on the part of the political class and the public administration; an initially defensive attitude of the operators of existing audiovisual services; an unequal and fragmented positioning from the professional point of view; and a guarantee attitude on the part of the sector's rights management entities as well as the few initiatives coming from civil society.
