The new cooperative press in Western Europe: an alternative model between tradition and journalistic innovation
Abstract
The present paper analyses the characteristics of the current cooperative press in Western Europe. Even though the cooperative model has previously been used in media, since the outbreak of the 2008 crisis there has been a simultaneous appearance of such projects in different European countries. We maintain that cooperative media provide an innovative approach to the conventional journalistic enterprise and that they partially continue the heritage of alternative communication. To prove this hypothesis, we conduct an exploratory and descriptive research based on a sample of representative cases. Firstly, we analyze the metajournalistic discourses of these media, and then we detect and describe the innovative elements that are present in them. We establish that the current European cooperative press entails an alternative way to journalistic innovation that rests on a unique content, organizational, financial and accountability model.
