Human Rights NGO’s Discourse in Portuguese Media
Abstract
With this study we want to observe how human rights NGOs interact in public space. To do so we will analyze published news in four Portuguese media – an independent newspaper, “Público”; a public television, RTP; a private radio TSF; and a news agency, Lusa. We collected and analyzed news stories from 2009 to 2011 - four weeks in March, June, September and December. From the collected data we intend to understand NGO’s speech when they are news sources in Portuguese context. What kind of topics and issues, spokespersons and interventions are present in the published news Portuguese media, when we talk about human rights NGOs. Thus, starting from a brief reflection on human rights NGO and their interaction with the media, we try to understand how these non-governmental voices participate and are represented through journalistic discourse.
