Few and Silenced: Female Presence in Portuguese Sports Television Journalism during Euro 2024
Abstract
This study critically analyzes the space allocated to the participation of female journalists on Portuguese television during coverage of Euro 2024. Twenty editions of three special programs dedicated to this sporting event were analyzed: Euro Nights, on RTP 3; Game Day, on CNN; and Diário do Euro, on SIC Notícias. The methodology adopted was content analysis. During the period analyzed, no female journalists appeared in the coverage inside stadiums or training centers in Germany, highlighting a logic of exclusion from the most important journalistic spaces in the world of sports. Also relevant was the fact that male commentators were present in 100% of the recorded programs, while female commentators represented only 25%, exclusively on one channel (CNN) and with a single female commentator. The research goes beyond numerical measurement, proposing a reflection on the nature of female participation in the spaces analyzed.
