Engagement in Foreign Language Learning: Designing an Online Questionnaire during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic

Keywords: Engagement, language education, e-learning, questionnaire design, studies during the pandemic

Abstract

The objective of this study was to design an online questionnaire for the study of engagement in language learning during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic based on the theoretical framework provided by Fredricks et al. (2004) and Mercer and Dörnyei (2020). The content was validated using the Content Validity Coefficient (CVC=.95), and the reliability (a=.91) was obtained through a pilot study (n=29) carried out in a language center affiliated to the Autonomous University of Baja California during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. On average, the participants showed a good level of engagement (m=152.86). The results provide validity and reliability to this 37-item instrument.
