Political communication in countermarked coins: communist messages in Second Republic and Spanish Civil War
Abstract
This text is part of a larger work on the communicational dimension of coins, understood as fundamental elements of the history of the communication of power and counterpower. We are investigating the use of countermarked coins made by individuals or institutions with communist ideology, such as the Spanish Communist Party, its followers or related parties and organizations, in the saturated propaganda context of Second Republic and Spanish Civil War.
After locating these pieces, an analysis of the content of the messages transmitted was carried out, detecting that they were a useful means to spread communist symbols and ideas, basing their effectiveness on their obligatory daily circulation derived from their priority commercial function.
