Marvel Comics #1000: The Translation of Real and Imaginary Denominations in Superheroic Fictional Worlds in the Graphic Narrative Modality

Keywords: Marvel Comics, fictional worlds, graphic narrative, English-Spanish translation

Abstract

This article is based on the research of the theoretical constructs called “fictional worlds” in the graphic narrative sphere between English and Spanish. Its main goals are the understanding of the design of fictional worlds and the strategies that can be applied to the translation of the founding elements of these imaginary universes. These objectives are accomplished through the research of the work called Marvel Comics #1000, included in the superhero genre, by means of a study methodology grounded on theories by authors such as Toury (1980) or Hermans (2014). Using it, the strategies used to render the 16 samples pertaining to 7 extracts from this composition included in this paper (real and imaginary denominations chosen taking into account their importance to conceive the narrative sphere built in this work) will be observed and conclusions regarding the functionality of the equivalents destined to evoke this fictional world will be drawn.
