Song translation in films: comparative analysis of cinematographic genres

Keywords: Song translation, audiovisual translation, films, audiovisual genres

Abstract

Musical content has played a key role since the beginning of cinema. Music and songs are an essential part of cinematographic products, particularly in certain genres. The present article carries out a comparative analysis based on a corpus composed of twelve films of the children and adult animation, musical, romantic comedy, and thriller cinematographic genres. Such analysis attends to translation modalities and strategies used to prioritize elements such as rime, fidelity or meaning in each song. Results show a trend to dub songs in children movies, to subtitle songs in all audience films, and not to translate not original songs from soundtrack.
