Style Analysis of two translations: the English and the Spanish versions of the novel 傾城之戀 ('Qing cheng zhi lian'), by Eileen Chang
Abstract
The translator is a mediator between two languages and cultures, a connection between two different worlds; hence, translated texts must or can be considered commodities produced by translators. The objective that I pursue here is to perform a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the English and Spanish translations of Eileen Chang’s contemporary novel 傾城之戀 (Qing cheng zhi lian). Using the tool Wordsmith, we compared the styles of the translators, Karen S. Kingsbury, Anne-Hélène Suárez and Xianghong Qu, who carried out these translations. With this objective, we present here some considerations regarding translations, positing as the central axis the idea that a judicious use of explanations in which the subtleties of the original language are explained would facilitate the reading of the text.
