Abstract

Cultural references in theatre plays represent actual translation challenges, since they have an impact on the performance potential of the dramatic text, and determine their reception. Les Fourberies de Scapin (1671), one of Molière’s most popular plays, contains a significant number of cultural references which affect its staging. Through a comparative analysis, we have detected that Julio Gómez de la Serna’s 1970s translation into Spanish–marked by a literary style which sometimes even goes free– fails to convey certain cultural content which is yet essential when reading and representing this dramatic text.
