Towards specialized linguistic training in sportsjournalism and communication
Abstract
This paper reflects on the relevance of specific language training for journalism and sports communication due to its significant growth and social impact. It describes the relationship between sport, communication and linguistic uses recorded in various language-oriented works and sections between 1992 and 2024. Moreover, It compares the results found in studies with a general or specific focus, following documentary analysis. The former address the misuse of public language and the historical explanation of terms and sayings, while the latter focus on their own experiences. This research organizes this wealth of data by trends and linguistic levels and it suggests a possible proposal for specialized training based on four axes. First, a reflection on linguistic usage based on the legacy of academics, copyeditors, comedians, linguists, journalists, language services and sociologists. Second, multilingual work with issues related to transcription, translation, and other influences of languages in contact, with special attention to English. Third, the development of computer skills related to the management of professional and personal registers for digital conversation and social media, as well as the application of artificial intelligence to writing tasks, machine translation, and the transcription of audiovisual material. And fourth, the influence of emotion management when summarizing information and feelings with a creativity that goes beyond the linguistic norm in the objective and subjective assessments of facts, the achievement of feats with their indelible marks on the memory or the farewells of myths
