The Viewer Journey: exploring motivations and affective stages of television series viewing
Abstract
Television series may entertain, thrill and even serve as triggers for discussion on topics that concern the sociocultural context of the viewer. With the aim of understanding the different emotions that may arise from watching television series, as well as the different underlying motivations of the process, this paper conducts a reception study in Spain based on five focus groups. The fieldwork has been analysed using thematic analysis and the results indicate different reception strategies such as binge-watching, motivations for viewing (emotional identification, among others) and affective states, such as the vicarious experiences experienced by the participants. In summary, based on the extensive experiences gathered from the study, this article concludes by pointing out the value of television reception studies in the fields of meaning production and communication.
