Coverage of climate change in the Southern zone of Chile

Keywords: content analysis, media narratives, climate variability, regional media

Abstract

This research analyzes the content on climate change in the regional newspapers of the southern zone of Chile: La Prensa Austral and El Divisadero, during the first half of 2022. For this purpose, a code book was built under the theoretical approach of framing and data analysis in SPSS, with 69 variables analyzed. The selection of the sample was carried out through the method of constructed weeks, concluding that the territory, despite being a region vulnerable to climate change, the narratives in the media analyzed are minimal (1.97%), with informative notes prevailing as the most used, mainly of male voices, focused on adaptation measures and reflective of impacts rather than causal ones. This research opens other questions about climate narratives in the southern region of Chile and the world.
