US-based SVOD services in Spain. analysis of availability and prominence of local works

Abstract

The article portrays and analyses the availability and prominence of Spanish works in the following five subscription video-on-demand services (SVOD) offered in Spain: Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+ and Apple TV+. The data from the fieldwork, carried out on samples obtained from their catalogues in January 2022 and 2023, shows how many Spanish works are available in said services, what are their main characteristics and which type of prominence these works are given (or not). It is concluded that, although all the catalogues analysed offer Spanish films and series, the amount of works varies greatly between the different services and is mostly constituted by feature films and fiction produced in Spanish. In terms of prominence, Netflix offers more facilities for users to find Spanish films and series, while the rest of the services have ample room for improvement.
