An analysis of the viral challenge “A scholarship for sorrow” and its impact on the group of people with disabilities.
Abstract
This study analyses the viral challenge "A scholarship for pity" developed on the platform since June 2021 and which has been denounced by the Spanish Committee of Representatives of People with Disabilities (Cermi) and other associations. For its development, a quantitative and content analysis was carried out on the 1,158 videos and their comments, as well as on another 25 videos published in a counter-campaign.
The research has been able to determine how the viral challenge mainly affects the disability group and also the relationship it establishes with other types of groups. It has also been possible to determine the predominance of a hate discourse centered on mockery and an empowering discourse that focuses on secondary gain, as well as the application of the theory of the spiral of silence in the comments that encompass the challenge.
