The Management of the Perceived Threat to Social Identity in the Hashtag #CaravanaMigrante: a Case Study of the Narrative in Mexico
Abstract
This article addresses the process of shaping social identity in the hashtag #CaravanaMigrante in Mexico in 2018. This fact was widely covered by the national and international media, in addition to having a heated repercussion on public opinion through the hybrid media system. The collection of analysis units on Twitter was developed through four episodes selected for their media relevance in Mexico. The analysis of the corpus was carried out through the qualitative methodology known as Thematic Analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2006; Sanderson, Frederick, and Stocz, 2016), from social psychology. The results show a greater thematization of messages aimed at an anti-racist social identity in three of the four selected episodes. The results also reveal the justifications for racist or xenophobic actions, as well as assessments of the actions and attitudes of the migrant group and see how users managed through various strategies the threat to their social identity.
