Ethical dimension of the journalistic use of artificial intelligence. Public media and verification platforms as precursors of accountability in Spain
Abstract
The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism is a growing trend that profoundly affects the journalistic production and dissemination model. As a consequence, some uses of this technology raise numerous ethical challenges. In this context, transparency is a key principle to move towards a responsible use of AI by the media. This study analyses the corporate websites and editorial blogs, the main spaces of accountability, of nine Spanish media linked to three different professional models: digital media, verification platforms and public broadcasters. The results show that some public media such as RTVE are being pioneers in explaining their relationship with AI. On the other hand, the commitment of verification platforms to the description of their professional methodology favours transparency about their use of data, algorithms and automations.
