Analysis of the Parliamentary Discourse of Vox During the XIV Legislature: Crispation, Polarization, and National-Populism
Abstract
This article collects the results of the analysis of the interventions of VOX political party president, Santiago Abascal, in the Spanish Congress of Deputies during the XIV Legislature. By focusing on the study of the relations between politics and ideology around the parliamentary discourse construction, the current research aims to meet three objectives: analysing the socio-political scenario construction (1), examining the discursive strategies of political confrontation (delegitimization, resistance, coercion, etc.) (2), and exploring the use of populist discursive features (3). Through an offensive language which resorts to slogans, unverified and doubtful data and information, the findings point out to the populist rhetoric of permanent polarization between the legitimizing principles of VOX and the Government political discrediting. Conclusions indicate that the use of emotional strategies of criticism and discredit on political confrontation issues lead to the political debate desensitization which normalizes prejudices and hate speech.
