The Dawn of Journalism in the 18th Century: The Marcos García Merchante News
Abstract
The events carried out by royalty; by the ecclesiastical hierarchy and by the religious orders were of general interest since the 16th century. In the 18th century, political, cultural and religious events were added to these interests, led by the people and institutions most closely linked to the towns and the various neighborhoods of the big cities. The protagonism of what happened at the local level enters, with force. As an example of this, we propose the study of a Sevillian writer who lived in the 18th century. His name, Marcos García Merchante. In this research we have used a qualitative methodology, based on inductive techniques. The main objective is the study of the news provided by this author, from the narrative and semantic point of view. Said analysis has led us to the conclusion that the newscasts with a local character, managed to perpetuate for posterity the events that occurred, from the immediacy.
