"The country we do not look at" Italian mafias by "Clarín" (1997-2020)

Abstract

This article deals with news coverage on Italian mafias published by «Clarín» between 1997 and 2020. In particular, the interest refers to paratextual elements present in the 219 selected articles. The results confirm a hierarchy in the mafia imaginary that the main Argentine newspaper puts into circulation led by the Sicilian cosa nostra, closer to violence and legal-police discourse than to the political-institutional one, with evident cinematographic connotations. Regarding the situation in Argentina, in recent years there has been an incipient recognition, albeit limited and circumstantial, of the presence of different mafia groups that puts in tension some of the classic denialist arguments about the mafia presence in the country.

María Soledad Balsas es investigadora en el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) con sede en la Universidad Nacional de La Matanza (UnLaM), Argentina. Es Doctora en Ciencias Sociales, Licenciada y Profesora en Ciencias de la Comunicación por la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Obtuvo el Master in Immigrati e rifugiati. Formazione, comunicazione ed integrazione sociale en la Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”, Italia. Es autora de Televisión y participación política transnacional. Las audiencias de televisión italiana en la Argentina, Buenos Aires, Prometeo, 2018 y Las migraciones en los libros de texto. Tensión entre globalización y homogeneidad cultural, Buenos Aires, Biblos, 2014. Su perfil de investigación se centra en la relación entre medios de comunicación y migraciones internacionales. Actualmente, se interesa en las diversas configuraciones discursivas sobre las mafias italianas en la Argentina.
