A threatened identity? The narrative structure of the articles published in the AfdKompakt magazine
Abstract
This paper offers the results of a content analysis applied to a set of texts hosted on the website of the German political party AfD. The selected texts are opinion pieces that refer to the signs of the German national identity. The method used allows identifying their narrative structures, revealing the logical relationships between the informative elements of each unit of analysis. It has been verified that German identity and citizen security are described as threatened by those who arrive from abroad (immigrants and asylees, especially if they are Muslims). The structural analysis reveals the existence of a recurring narrative element: ‘Immigration and asylum policy is misguided’. Besides the analysis results, this paper contributes to the methodological discussion on how to study the representations of immigrants and refugees in the digital media.
